Jan Wiele schrieb dazu in der FAZ: "(...) ein Ort zur Förderung und Archivierung traditioneller Musik, an dem man Gitarrensaiten oder auch ganze Instrumente, Platten und Bücher kaufen konnte. Vor allem aber lud der Ort zum Verweilen ein, und bald ging da jeder ein und aus, der irgendetwas mit Folk am Hut hatte. Etwa Alan Lomax, der große Klang-Archivar, aber auch Harry Belafonte, Pete Seeger natürlich, später auch Joni Mitchell und Tim Buckley." und Bob Dylan führte in seinen Chronicles: Volume One über seine Ankunft in New York aus: “I began hanging out at the Folklore Center, the citadel of Americana folk music. The small store was up a flight of stairs and the place had an antique grace. It was like an ancient chapel, like a shoebox sized institute.”
