"Trench art is the term applied to objects made or decorated by soldiers, prisoners of war and civilians between 1914 and 1939 and kept as souvenirs or household ornaments for themselves or their relatives. With so many lives lost it is easy to see why these battlefield artworks became regarded by servicemen and their families as almost holy relics. (...) The most interesting piece I discovered was what they call a 'dixaline'. A dixie is a large military metal pot used for cooking food or brewing tea which is then made into a miniture guitar like object. The process of transforming this pot into a musical instrument is most fascinating and the list of tours the instrument has survived, is even more extraordinary." (ABC Mid West Australia)
